During a press day in Hollywood for the comedy “Blended” (in theaters May 23) I had the pleasure of sitting down with the hilarious Wendi McLendon-Covey to talk about this movie, comedy, and much more.

How was the experience of joining a cast and crew that have worked together more than once ?

I was nervous. I thought “What if they don’t like me?” But they put me at ease right away. Adam [Sandler] makes you feel like you are an old friend of his. He is also my boss in “The Goldbergs,” his production company oversees my show. Same thing with Drew. We needed to play best friends and I haven’t met her and we didn’t have time to hangout or anything. But it was pretty seamless. It isn’t always like that.
I didn’t come in until the last 2 weeks of filming. Everybody had been in Africa. I had no idea what took place before. They could have improvised something that wasn’t in the script. But it worked out perfectly. I saw the movie and it is better than I expected.

Is this the best time to be a female comedian?

I am always thinking about that: “What has changed?” And I think is the writing. I think the scripts have gotten better. To me, funny is what feels real. For a long time I used to read and think “I don’t know a single woman that says this nonsense.” We are not that one-dimensional. Now the scripts that need to be seen are getting seen.
Sometimes something seems funny in the page but then you get to see it played and it isn’t funny at all. “What happened here? How could I misjudge that?” I think is the chemistry with the other actors.

I think that Barrymore and Sandler make each other better. Have you experienced that with other actors?

I definitely felt that when I was doing sketch comedy at The Groundlings Theater here in Los Angeles. There were some people that I clicked with and I felt “This is going to be a home-run. Tonight it will be a good night!” And other people just sucked the life right out of you [laughs]. I think that you are right, that Drew and Adam are better together. People love them! This is their first movie in 16 years and I think it is shame that it took that long. Maybe after this they will do it again.

Do you have any preference between TV and films?

In terms of doing the work I don’t have a preference. I love doing movies [she knocks on wood]. I like the pace of TV more because it is faster and you can see the finish product sooner. Every movie, even if they rush it, it will take at least a year. You see it and think “15 minutes, huh? OK.”

Can you enjoy a movie that you have been part of like if you were a regular viewer?

It is really hard for me, but in this I did. I have seen other movies that I am in and I was like “I can’t make it to the end. This is too disappointing.” But I did loose myself in this movie. When I watch “The Goldbergs” I also get lost in the story and I get emotional. I don’t watch the dailies though, that would mess with my head. It is a good question, I wonder what other people say about that.

You don’t share any scene here, but isn’t Terry Crews just hysterical?

He is the funniest man in America. I have done three movies with him. I didn’t work with him in this one but at least I got to see him in the junkets. He is a good luck charm for everything!

“After a disastrous blind date, single parents Lauren (Barrymore) and Jim (Sandler) agree on only one thing: they never want to see each other again. But when they each sign up separately for a fabulous family vacation with their kids, they are all stuck sharing a suite at a luxurious African safari resort for a week.”
