Jorge Garcia Talks ROCK DOG in Exclusive Interview The new animated adventure ROCK DOG arrives to theaters nationwide this Friday, Feb. 23. One of the colorful characters is a mellow goat named Germur, whose voice is provided by actor Jorge Garcia (LOST, Hawaii Five-O, The Wedding Ring). I recently had the chance to speak with the Latino actor about his experience working in the family film, and more. The film, directed by Ash Brannon (Surf’s Up, Toy Story 2), also stars the voice talents of Luke Wilson, Eddie Izzard, Lewis Black, Kenan Thompson, Mae Whitman, Matt Dillon, Sam Elliott, and J.K. Simmons. Did you have experience doing voice acting for animation? I have done something for a few projects, including BoJack Horseman. This was definitely the biggest part. It was very unique because it was done with other actors in the room. I was with Luke Wilson, for example, and we could look to each other. That physicality helps to make it more organic. Most of the time you just have your imagination. It’s cool to see faces. Did you have an input in the way your character looks and speak? They sent me the sketch of Germur. That was basically what drew me to the project. They told me that they had me in mind so the character was based in the way I speak. I gave them my version and they liked it. The protagonist of this story, Bodi, is someone that defies his family’s expectations and wants to become an artist. Do you relate with that? I definitely had a desire for attention since I was a young boy. As a teenager I could taste the feeling of an audience’s approval. It took me some time to give myself permission to fully pursue it as a job. I finally did and I decided to enter the game, officially. What can be done to start seeing more Latino actors in Hollywood productions? We need to start telling our own stories and support each other. The demand is there. ROCK DOG will be released in theaters on February 24. When a radio falls from the sky into the hands of a wide-eyed Tibetan Mastiff, he leaves home to fulfill his dream of becoming a musician, setting into motion a series of completely unexpected events.
