Ken Watanabe Talks GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS – Exclusive Interview The new blockbuster from Warner Bros. Pictures, GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS sees the return of the iconic monster, bigger and better than ever. A couple of human characters are also back, including Academy Award Nominee Ken Watanabe as Monarch’s Dr. Ishiro Serizawa. I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with the experienced Japanese actor to talk about the anticipated sequel. What are the main themes that are explored in this chapter? We need to understand each other. King of Monsters symbolizes the natural disasters that we are facing around the world. We can’t control nature, but we need to think about it. In the same way, we need to think about how we can coexist with the titans. I try to communicate this very thing, through my character. When you uttered the line “Let them fight!” in the previous Godzilla film, did you know that it was going to become such a famous quote? No, I didn’t know! That happened at the end of a shooting day, while the sun was going down. There were a lot of extras, and mosquitoes around our faces and legs. I wanted to say “Let them bite!” Those were real monsters! Yes, but smaller. Do you feel a special connection to movies like “Pokémon Detective Pikachu” and this one, that are exporting Japan exports in terms of pop culture? I didn’t have much knowledge about Pokémon. Because of my age, I am way more familiar with Gojira. The Japanese were wondering, before the first movie, “How Hollywood could make a Gojira film?” and it was a huge success. Same thing happened with Pokemon. What do you think that Director Michael Dougherty brought to the franchise? I met him after reading the script. He explained the story, and his vision to me, while showing pictures of the creatures appearing in this film, some battle scenes, etc. He showed a lot of passion, so I trusted him. Do you have a favorite monster here? I like King Ghidorah. Each of the three heads have a different mind, a different personality… What? The original version didn’t have that kind of detail. What we see in this movie is so crazy! Does King Kong have a chance against Godzilla? I think so. But the final champion will be… Pikachu. [Laughs] Just kidding! Spoiler alert! I have heard some things about part 3, but I can’t share details. Fortunately, my good friend and fellow Japanese actor Shun Oguri plays a very important role. That is a very good connection between two Japanese actors. GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS is now playing in theater. The new story follows the heroic efforts of the cryptozoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient superspecies, thought to be mere myths, rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
