See The Man of Steel and Gotham in ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ New Photo Warner Bros. has released the first official photo of Henry Cavill as The Man of Steel in the upcoming “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice” (in theaters May 6, 2016). Besides his belt (stronger yellow, square buckle) the suit looks the same, as well as his overall appearance. What makes the image interesting is the setting. There is no official confirmation that Superman is in Gotham, but you don’t need to be the caped detective to know that: The architectural landscape is totally different from Metropolis; The rain and darkness are elements from the “The Dark Knight Rises” imagery, not “Man of Steel” marketing; and it is mentioned in a USA Today article published today that this film “takes [Superman] to new environments such as Gotham City.” Christopher Nolan wanted to set Batman in the real modern world, distancing the hero from the silliness of the previous Joel Schumacher movies. But for a universe where Amazonian and aquatic warriors exist it makes total sense to portray a more comic-bookish Gotham, with its unique flavor contrasting a more generic Metropolis. Now I wonder if that graffiti means something (does it say “Help Ghost”?), if the next image of Batman will be an extension to the right of this image to create a banner, or if Ben Affleck’s hero will be showed in the Kryptonian’s city. A shot of him on the Daily Planet rooftop would be awesome! But that’s not all folks. In that same USA Today article, director Zack Snyder talked a little bit about the anticipated superhero team-up. On Superman: “We’ve both created this guy and we can push him around a little bit. The more time I spend with Henry, the more he’s Superman to me.” On Batman: “I was in no rush to put Batman in the movie, but on the other hand it seemed organic the way our story was unfolding to start to feather him in […] It’s cooler to see a crusty old Batman beating the snot out of guys.” On their relationship and the title: “Suffice it to say there is a ‘v’ in between their names. [The ‘v’ instead of a ‘vs’ is a way] to keep it from being a straight ‘versus’ movie, even in the most subtle way.” The super frenemies will hit the screens -and each other- on May 6, 2016.
