ROGUE ONE Panel and Teaser Reaction from STAR WARS Celebration Don’t call them “spin-offs” nor “stand-alone” movies. That was one of the main things that Lucasfilm wanted to make clear in today’s panel at Star Wars Celebration. According to studio president Kathleen Kennedy there are “Saga” and “Anthology” films. The logo for Gareth Edward’s effort appeared onscreen with the word “Anthology” at the bottom. Josh Trank didn’t make it for health reasons, according to panel’s host Pablo Hidalgo, so most of it focused on Edwards and the journey of bringing this chapter to life. It was confirmed that Rogue One’s events take place between Episodes III and IV, and that the story will follow “a band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans.” Without Jeids to save the day, regular people will need to make a stand. The characters’ alliances will be blurry, avoiding clear good and evil factions, like in the previous movies. Its feel and look will follow a “realistic” and “subjective” line according to the director. As if his filmography wasn’t a strong enough indication of that approach, the filmmaker has surrounded himself with people who have worked in titles like Saving Private Ryan, Zero Dark Thirty, and directors like Terrence Malick and Neil Blomkamp. A concept image was shown, featuring a group of soldiers running in the dark under a rainy and muddy terrain. Production starts this summer, but thanks to the artists at ILM a brief video was put together, “very quickly” according to Edwards. The digitally created teaser has only one continuous aerial shot over a paradisiacal landscape full of trees and mountains. Obi-Wan Kenobi’s line from the original film is played in voiceover: “For over a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times. Before the Empire.” After that, the gigantic Death Star is revealed in the sky, orbiting the planet. The teaser ends with the logo and the sound of soldiers talking over walkie talkies, with increasing static. The crowd just went nuts, the first, second and third time that the video was played. Hidalgo said to Edwards “You are not kidding when you say that this is a war movie” to what the director responded “It’s called Star …Wars.” The dark and gritty “Star Wars: Rogue One, Anthology” will open in theaters on December 2016.
