Fans of actor and singer Tyrese Gibson don’t have to wait until “The Fate of the Furious” to enjoy the multi-talented artist’s talent.

Every Wednesday night, Gibson can be seen on Fox’s drama STAR, playing Pastor Harris.

I recently had the chance to briefly talk about his experience on the Lee Daniels’ show and more.

How does it feel to portray such a wise, but conflicted and complex character?

I am loving it, man. This show is uncomfortable to shoot and it’s uncomfortable to watch. I told creator and writer Lee Daniels that this was exactly what I wanted. I love this level of acting. I have been blessed with the chance to do movies like Baby Boy, Four Brothers, and Annapolis. It is good to be back to dark and complex characters.

In episode 7, “Black Wherever I Go,” you gave an emotional speech during the funeral of a victim of police brutality. Were you thinking about what we are seeing in the news during that scene?

We are not shooting that scene in a soundstage or movie studio. We are shooting that scene in the ghetto, in Atlanta. It’s a little dirty church that is in the hood. So, I was thinking about police brutality and people dying left and right. If you are a Pastor in the inner cities, you have to do a speech at a funeral every other week. At a certain point you may run out of word to say. You don’t know how to give inspiration when people are in caskets every two weeks. I thought about a conversation I had with a Pastor in Chicago who is going exactly through that.

-Catch the latest episode of STAR each Wednesday, 9PM/8c on Fox.

Meet STAR (newcomer Jude Demorest), a tough-as-nails young woman, who came up in the foster care system and decides one day to take control of her destiny. Star tracks down her sister, SIMONE (newcomer Brittany O’Grady), and her Instagram bestie, ALEXANDRA (newcomer Ryan Destiny), and together, the trio journeys to Atlanta to become music superstars. Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award, Grammy Award and Golden Globe Award winner Queen Latifah (“Bessie,” “Bringing Down The House”) plays CARLOTTA, a surrogate mother to the young crew. Emmy Award nominee Benjamin Bratt (“24: Live Another Day,” “Law & Order”) rounds out the cast as JAHIL, a down-on-his-luck talent agent looking to revitalize his career, who’s taken a certain shining to Star. The series will also feature guest star and Grammy Award winner Lenny Kravitz (“Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” “The Hunger Games”). Reality soon dawns on the girls’ fantasies, and they start to learn that ambition often comes at a cost. And sometimes that cost is too high.
